The Dasha System: How Timing Works

Vedic astrology uses a sophisticated timing system known as Dasha. The most widely applied system is the Vimshottari Dasha, covering a cycle of 120 years.

Each planet rules a specific period of life.

Planetary period sequence

The sequence begins with the ruler of the Moon’s Nakshatra at birth.

Example: If the birth Nakshatra is ruled by Saturn, the Saturn Mahadasha begins first.

What a Dasha does

A Dasha does not “cause” events directly. Instead, it activates the results of planets already placed in the birth chart.

Thus:

  • A well-placed planet may bring growth during its period
  • A stressed placement may bring challenges

Why Dasha is central

Without Dasha analysis, predictions remain incomplete. Classical texts consistently emphasise timing through planetary periods rather than sign-based forecasts.
