The question of whether astrology is real has existed for centuries. In classical Indian thought, Jyotish is described as one of the six Vedanga disciplines connected with ritual timing and calendrical calculation.
What Jyotish was originally for
Historically, Jyotish served three primary purposes:
- Determining ritual timings
- Tracking celestial cycles
- Correlating planetary movements with seasonal patterns
Predictive personal astrology evolved later as a specialised interpretive discipline.
How classical texts describe prediction
Traditional manuals such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra emphasise that planetary indications show tendencies, probabilities, and timing frameworks rather than unavoidable outcomes. They tell the route a life might supposed to take, following the Gita norms as base.
Classical authors consistently state that:
- Effort (Purushartha) matters
- Ethical conduct influences outcomes
- Planetary indications are conditional
Thus, Jyotish is treated as a structured interpretive system.
